Research summary | Floods are a common occurrence in Indonesia and Australia, and their frequency and severity are expected to worsen with the predicted impacts of climate change. There is an urgent need to strengthen the flood resilience capabilities of local communities, particularly among vulnerable population groups. Vulnerable groups are of concern as they are hard to reach, and have economic, social or physical constraints that limit their ability to prepare for and respond to a flood situation. Using a case study and mixed methods approach, the research will focus on identifying the unique needs of vulnerable groups in a flood situation; and mapping the key information sources used by vulnerable groups. The outcomes of the project will provide essential baseline knowledge to policy makers and emergency teams to guide flood response planning and resource allocation to best support and empower vulnerable groups in a flood situation. |
