KONEKSI Program Launch
The Launch Event of the Australia Indonesia Knowledge and Innovation Partnership Program (KONEKSI)
- The Indonesian and Australian governments have officially launched the Knowledge, Technology, and Innovation Collaboration (KONEKSI) Program. KONEKSI Program is expected to enhance the knowledge-based solutions for inclusive and sustainable policies and technologies. The program is also expected to generate best practices that strengthen the triple-helix collaboration involving government, universities, and industry.

- Deputy for Human Development, Society, and Culture at the Ministry of National Development Planning/National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), Amich Alhumami, stated that the KONEKSI programme will significantly contribute to strengthening Indonesia’s transformation pillars in the National Long-Term Development Plan (RPJPN) for 2025–2045. According to him, two points make the KONEKSI program highly relevant. Amich also hopes that the KONEKSI programme can generate best practices that will form the foundation for strengthening the triple-helix collaboration between the government, universities, and industries.

- The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) ensures that all research schemes under the second phase of the Indonesia-Australia research collaboration are open to all. The Head of BRIN, Laksana Tri Handoko, stated that despite being designed as an open scheme, the research programme will still adhere to a top-down principle. Laksana Tri Handoko also assures that Australia, as a global partner in the KONEKSI programme, will receive the best proposals, and the research will be executed by a team of researchers with a strong track record in their respective fields.

- The Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Nadiem Anwar Makarim, stated that the KONEKSI programme will strengthen the research ecosystem in both Indonesia and Australia. - Deputy for Human Development, Society, and Culture at the Ministry of National Development Planning/National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), Amich Alhumami, stated that collaboration among researchers, whether from the government, universities, or independent institutions, can strengthen the development of national planning documents. Alhumami made these remarks during a talk at the launch event of the KONEKSI programme in Jakarta on Monday (11/13/23). On the same occasion, Alhumami also appreciated the KONEKSI programme, which is the result of a partnership between the governments of Australia and Indonesia. According to Alhumami, the programme, which emphasises a multi-disciplinary scientific approach, is relevant in the context of formulating national policies, a task assigned to Bappenas.

Research and Technology
- BRIN, through the Nuclear Technology Polytechnic of Indonesia (Poltek Nuklir), is committed to preparing human resources capable of operating Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) technology.
- The Enhanced Regional EU-ASEAN Dialogue Instrument (E-READI) visited the research facilities and infrastructure of BRIN in the Soekarno Science and Technology Area (KST) in Cibinong to study the RI-ASEAN landscape.
- The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology organized the World Scientific Forum of Indonesia (WSFI), which serves as a discussion space and platform for gathering ideas from university rectors, the diaspora, and academics to collaborate with the industry.
- The Centre for Appropriate Technology Research (PRTTG) at BRIN has developed an initial concept of how technology will be applied, with specific precision in manufacturing engineering, focusing more specifically on machines and wider precision in agriculture.

Research and Innovation
- BRIN is addressing Indonesia’s agricultural challenges, including the aging farmer demographic and limited quality seeds, by implementing technology-based innovations such as Agriculture 4.0 and the Internet of Things (IoT) for sustainable food production.
- BRIN is developing the Micro Electric Vehicle-Teleoperated Driving System (MEVi-TDS), a prototype micro-sized electric vehicle that is operable remotely via a Wi-Fi network.
- The Directorate General of Higher Education, Research, and Technology and Kedaireka Program (Cooperation in the Business World and Creative Creations) will organize the Merdeka Innovation Summit 2023 (MIS) on November 16-17, 2023.
- The Health Research Organization (ORK) of BRIN and Prof. Dr. Sulianti Saroso Infectious Disease Hospital (RS- PISS) have signed an MoU to expand their research collaboration on infectious and non-infectious diseases, including infectious diseases, vaccine drugs, precision and regenerative treatments, as well as health tools and detection.
- 204 researchers worldwide attended the Annual International Conference (AIC) at Syiah Kuala University (USK), Aceh, to share and exchange research findings, perspectives, and ideas.
- Indonesia is ranked fifth globally in the field of research and development (R&D) collaboration between universities and industries, according to the Global Innovation Index 2023. With the achieved results, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology is committed to maintaining and further promoting collaboration between universities and industries to accelerate Indonesia’s development.
- Indonesia’s innovation level has seen an improvement, ranking 61st globally according to the Global Innovation Index 2023 released by the World Intellectual Property Organization. This achievement is attributed to the hard work of universities, industry partners, the media, and the government in promoting the development and enhancement of the innovation ecosystem in Indonesia.
- Telkom University and the University of Wollongong, Australia, have collaborated on creating a tidal flood monitoring and mitigation system called Tide Eye, which is based on artificial intelligence (AI) and combines drone technology with the Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure.
- The Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Regulation (Permendikbudristek) 53/2023 encourages the emergence of innovations in final projects at universities. With this regulation, the thesis is not the only determining factor for students’ graduation.
Research and Funding
- The Director of Talent Management at BRIN, Raden Arthur Ario Lelono, highlighted BRIN’s research funding and educational qualifications strategies, emphasising the crucial role of universities, particularly in programs like Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM), BARISTA (Research and Innovation Talent Assistance), and others.
- Presidential candidate Ganjar Pranowo stated he would increase research funding to 1% of GDP in the “Sarasehan 100 Ekonom” event organized by INDEF and CNBC Indonesia.
- The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology provides a scholarship for Ph.D. students amounting to up to IDR 50 million, who have completed their dissertation proposal defence or are in the process of completing their doctoral dissertation. The scholarship covers funding for leading or government-priority-topic research that contributes to national science and technology advancement.
Research and Women
- The Acting Director General of Higher Education, Research, and Technology at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Nizam, emphasises that the government is committed to creating a healthy and harassment-free higher education environment, with perpetrators of sexual harassment facing sanctions.
Environment and Climate Change (ECC)
- The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), and BRIN are collaborating to seek the best methods to address the microplastic issues.
- In the 42nd UNESCO General Conference, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Suharti, emphasised that Indonesia will be committed to inclusive innovation and research for sustainable resources, supporting biodiversity conservation, and green and blue economic initiatives.
- BRIN revealed anthropogenic activities related to human activities, such as land clearing, peatland drainage, and large-scale plantation expansion, often lead to forest and land fires.
- BRIN has warned the public to be aware of the potential for extreme weather in several regions of Indonesia in the coming times. The threat is due to several global climate phenomena, including warming or rising temperatures in the South China Sea.
- As instructed by President Joko Widodo, coal-fired power plants (PLTU) in Indonesia have installed scrubbers, an exhaust air system device to minimize air pollution.
- The Head of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Dwikorita Karnawati, stated that based on data from the World Meteorological Organization, the year 2023 was declared the hottest year in the history of climate records.
- The government has established the Nuclear Energy Program Implementation Organization (NEPIO) to study the development of Nuclear Power Plants (PLTN) to achieve Indonesia’s Net Zero Emission by 2060.
- The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources aims to commence commercial operation of Nuclear Power Plants (PLTN) in Indonesia by 2032 as part of the transition program to renewable energy, with the development plan outlined in the draft of the National Energy Policy Government Regulation.
- The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of South Sulawesi collaborates with the Indonesian National Army (TNI), BRIN, and BMKG to conduct Weather Modification Technology (TMC) to address prolonged drought.
- Based on research and data from Climate Central, the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) and BRIN revealed that five cities/districts in Indonesia are predicted to be at risk of rapid submersion due to rising sea levels and climate crisis.
