Kupang, Indonesia – 27 June 2024 – A collaborative effort with prominent Indonesian and Australian institutions, PREDIKT Tangguh Indonesia, Charles Darwin University, Universitas Nusa Cendana, Universitas Multimedia Nusantara, ChildFund Indonesia, Harkaway Primary School, Indonesian Society for Disaster Management (MPBI), and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, is proud to announce the progress of its pioneering research project aimed at empowering children as agents of change through the development of inclusive edu-games focused on climate change and disaster resilience, supported by KONEKSI.
The research prioritises climate education for children and young people and promotes them to take action in adaptation and mitigation. Employing inclusive action research methods, the project explores how children learn about climate change. To achieve this, the project creates educational materials through a gamified approach (edu-games) using both digital and non-digital media. These edu-games are designed to be child friendly, sustainable, affordable, and easily scalable.
The project’s objective is to cultivate learners’ abilities and confidence in critical and creative thinking about climate change. It also aims to equip them with effective risk communication skills, foster personal and social responsibility, and nurture environmentally conscious citizens who appreciate diversity and gender equality as well as disability inclusiveness.
The recent quarter witnessed substantial progress in the edu-games’ design process. This phase began with prototyping based on baseline surveys, workshops, and consultations with children and their teachers. The prototypes were then refined through a participatory Co-creation Workshop. Here, 92 children (36 male; 56 female) and 13 teachers (2 male; 11 female) provided valuable feedback – in relation to the game design, methods, rules, and mechanics, with a particular emphasis from special education school children on ensuring inclusivity for various impairments.
Furthermore, Multi-Stakeholder Workshops were held in October 2023 and February 2024, that brought together over 30 institutions to gather valuable insights, document local practices and characteristics, and strengthen stakeholder collaboration. Collaborations with CSOs like the Kopi Coalition and the Indonesia Children in a Changing Climate Coalition have significantly enriched the project’s approach to empowering children as agents of change in the face of climate change.
PREDIKT Tangguh Indonesia is pleased to collaborate with esteemed Australian institutions, including Charles Darwin University and Harkaway Primary School in Victoria, Australia and prominent Indonesian institutions. This collaboration, facilitated by KONEKSI’s support for partnerships, is fostering the development of innovative and impactful educational tools for children in both Indonesia and Australia. This project exemplifies the potential of international cooperation in addressing global challenges like climate change.
