Research summary | The objective of the project is to develop and test novel approaches in the field of integrated waste, especially solid waste and wastewater solutions, to achieve zero plastic waste discharge into the Citarum River. Using transdisciplinary expertise and community-led decision making, the project will bring together technological and social innovation to (1) establish a ‘living lab’ village-based pilot for showcasing, education, training and capacity building, and as the subject of living lab research; (2) design principles for operationalising and upscaling integrated waste-to-resource systems in TPS-3R facilities servicing up to 5,000 households. The team will also develop a proof of concept for integrated waste and waste management, and evidence to evaluate policy effectiveness at local, national and international scales. In the long run, the new knowledge created from this project would be used to inform strategies for addressing river pollution in the Citarum basin and for other degraded rivers in Southeast Asia, improving the lives of vulnerable communities dependent on rivers for water and livelihoods. |
